5 Mistakes to avoid when embarking on a home renovation project

Many of us tend to go overboard when planning a home renovation. We try to stuff in every detail into the plan, at times not even pausing to think whether these ideas would suit our home or not. In that way, we tend to fall into a trap by committing many mistakes we would definitely regret later. If you are planning to renovate your home, then here are some very common mistakes you would need to avoid at all costs.

Mistake #1: I want it because it looks good in my neighbor’s home

All of us tend to envy our neighbor’s home even though our own homes look perfect. Moreover, if our neighbor gets something new and fancy, we race to get it ourselves just because we like the way the item accentuated their home décor. But will the same item do justice to our home décor? That’s something you need to think every time you start envying your neighbor’s house.

Our Advice: Don’t simply go ahead and copy the décor ideas chosen by others. Choose your own ideas and create your own home décor style to remain unique.

Mistake #2: Follow a trend blindly

Here again, you would think that a specific home décor trend showcased on a magazine would look awesome in your home. However, remind yourself of the fact that most of the rooms shown in these magazines are never used whereas your home has its share of traffic in the form of your family and guests. So following a trend blindly just because it looks good would not work out well for your home in the long run.

Our Advice: Follow your heart. Your home is yours to decorate. So choose those styles and trends that showcase your personality instead. This would lead to a more personal space that makes you feel truly at home.

Mistake #3: I want an outdated paint color for the walls

Some colors like blue remain in vogue for many years. And there are some colors like mauve that are too outdated to even warrant a second glance. Choosing to paint your home in these colors will transport your home back a good 20 years or so. Not to mention, they will give a tacky look to your home.

Our Advice: Stick to colors that don’t fade away with changing trends. But whatever you do, stay away from the outdated ones.

Mistake #4: I want to choose the most luxurious décor items for my home

Sure it’s your home and your money. You can choose to decorate it whichever you want. But attempting to showcase every single luxurious item you bought within a single space would signal only one thing; gluttony. A home is a place where you need to relax in at the end of the day. It should be filled with memories rather than just designer garb.

Our Advice: Don’t overcrowd the room with too many designer pieces. Strike a balance between the flashy pieces and the low cost, sentimental pieces that would result in a home that looks elegant and yet, very homely.

Mistake #5: I want flowers on the upholstery

Large flower prints on upholstery made a great entry in the 90s. However, the world has moved on since then and so have the home décor trends. It would therefore, do no justice to your home to opt for large flowery prints on your upholstery and furnishings. Very strong patterns would threaten to overthrow the room’s central theme and make a mockery of the décor instead of highlighting it in a positive way.

Our Advice: Stick to either plain fabrics or very small, sparsely distributed patterns for upholstery. This way, you can ensure that these patterns blend in seamlessly with the room’s décor rather than stand out glaringly.

Planning a home renovation project? Then stay away from some mistakes commonly committed by house owners when opting for a home makeover.
