Johnny Chung Lee, known to possess legendary do-it-yourself talents, has created a video chat robot using an iRobot Create, a netbook with Skype, a cable and control software – also developed by himself. Costing a mere $500, which is downright cheap when compared to what one has to shell out in order to own an Anybot ($15,000), Lee’s digital surrogate comes with a stand on top of the robot to help get the PC closer to human height.

A fish-eye lens has also been attached to the webcam for better remote viewing, and re-wiring done to allow the netbook to charge via the Create’s base station. The entire code and a set of how-to instructions can be found on the creator’s blog.
