Babushka doll-inspired nesting seats: 2×1 Sofa by Maria Fernanda Ocampo

Sofa by María Fernanda Ocampo

Created for the “Design to Change the World” competition held by the award-winning firm AGENT Strategic Intelligence Agency, the 2×1 Sofa is one of the best examples of innovating seating designs that saves space and fits in cozily within the urban living environment. The compact seating set created by Mexican designer Maria Fernanda Ocampo features two sofas that are made using sustainable materials like industrial felt and cardboard. The babushka doll-style nested design allows users to put away the smaller sofa when not in use to save precious floor space.

The contest challenged designer to create furniture using sustainable and recycled materials without compromising on their visual appeal or practical function. The larger of the two seats in the 2×1 Sofa is split in the middle with its hollow section holding the smaller sofa. When users need to use the smaller sofa, they simply have to separate the two parts of the larger sofa from their Velcro-fitted seams and remove the smaller seat from it. The two halves of the larger sofa can then be re-attached to form the seat.
