Everything you need to know about building a sound proof room

Sound proof room

Introduction

Many people are not able to focus on their work or have a sound sleep due to the noise that can be from loud music or laundry room , vehicles, or any other thing. Noise pollution is a nuisance, it is the cause of hypertension, insomnia, stress and various other diseases. So, what is the solution for this?

First, sound travels through air so we need vacuum to stop the noise entering the room but it is easier said than done. In most of the cases sound travels through matter such as wood, wall, etc. There are various techniques to stop these sound vibrations to travel through wall or wood. The wall should be heavy as noise reduction practically depends upon the mass of wall, more the mass better it is for noise reduction.

Procedure

1. Start with the selection of the room which you want to make soundproof. Preferably, it should be at a maximum distance from the source of noise like busy roads, factories, railway tracks etc.
2. Watch out for floor if it is under construction one might use decoupling like inserting clips & channel on a single stud wall, or to frame a wall that is two studs wide with a 1″ space between them. You can also cover your floor with heavy carpet and thick pad. One can also add floating floor above the existing one.
3.You can also hang carpets and blankets on walls to make the room soundproof. One can also add acoustic tiles or hang sheet rock on the walls.
4. For reducing noise, walls should be made up of wall sections and sills which should be separated by some distance in centimeters. Sills should be built in such a way that surface should prevent sound from one sill to another.
5. Windows should be thermally insulated and double glazing should be done on windows. Windows must be covered with curtains of heavy material. Air space between glass panes should be high. Windows should be avoided wherever possible.
6. Add another door inside to reduce noise. Be cautious to seal the spaces between door and walls. Doors made up of fiberglass will certainly help in reducing noise.
7. Ceilings can be soundproofed by applying sound-deadening matting or hanging a suspended acoustic tile ceiling.

Things to Watch Out

1. Using double-pane windows with vinyl frames also helps to cut down the noise levels.
2. Concrete block is also beneficial in noise reduction.
3. No voids should be left in wall framing. Even if a small hole is left open it may increase noise in the room.
4. New construction techniques are useful in controlling noise than after construction techniques.
5. Thermal insulation is also quite effective.
