Overview

Smoke detectors are a necessity when we talk about home safety. However, their dull, industrial looking appearance is enough to ruin any carefully coordinated interior décor scheme. For this reason, many people keep these safety gadgets tucked away in corners or out of sight which can be hazardous to life and property. The Chick-a-Dee Smoke Detector by designer Louise van der Veld addresses this very problem of aesthetics and provides people with a playful alternative design that allows smoke detectors to be turned into artistic installations that flatter every décor type.

What’s unique?

The Chick-a-Dee Smoke Detector is shaped like an American Black-capped Chickadee and mimics the bird’s sound, size and appearance to the tee. When the device detects smoke, it lets off a “chick-a-dee-dee” sound that is actually an exact replica of the bird’s familiar call.

High Points

Previously sold in the Netherlands, the Chick-a-Dee Smoke Detector has won accolades internationally as well including the first prize at a design competition for fire prevention devices known as the ‘Mooi uit de brand’.

The smoke detector is devised to start producing the bird’s call in a normal volume when it first detects smoke though it becomes louder as the smoke thickens and even reaches 85 decibels.

Available online in blue, pink, white with black base and all-white, the Chick a Dee Smoke Detector retails for $75.
