Common kitchen designing mistakes

Kitchen Interior Design

It is a dream of every homeowner to have a stunning and modern kitchen in his or her home. But many times while remodeling their kitchens people make a few mistakes. These are quite common mistakes that people make when designing their kitchens and because of these mistakes, they end up having a kitchen which is completely different from what they had in mind. The purpose of this article is to educate people about those mistakes, so that, they can be avoided in the future.

Mistakes:

Kitchen layout

A lot of people do not give the layout of the kitchen the importance it deserves. In interior design terminology the area which connects the three most important work stations in a kitchen is called the “kitchen triangle”. The three work stations it links are the stove, the sink and the refrigerator. The layout of the kitchen should be such that it is easy for the person working in the kitchen to move freely without any hindrance and get access to all these work stations easily. Ideally, these work stations should be no more than five meters apart from each other. This gives enough room to the person working in the kitchen to move freely across and it keeps the different work areas within reach.

Under utilization of storage space

You need to store a whole lot of things in a kitchen. Some of those things occupy a lot of space e.g. food processor. Even things such as regular kitchen utensils require a lot of space to be stored properly. You need to store these kitchen items in a manner that you can easily find them whenever you need them. Therefore, it is important that you store these items in an organized manner and in places where they are easily accessible.

Not investing too much

Do not invest all your money in designing a kitchen. People have the tendency to go for a lavish ultramodern kitchen which they later rue. As a general rule of thumb, a good kitchen should not cost more than 20% of the market value of your home. In under no circumstances should you spend more than this amount on your kitchen.

Not seeking professional help

It is always advisable that you seek professional help in renovating or designing your kitchen. People generally try to do complex work on their own to save a few bucks. But without proper knowledge and guidance, it is not always possible for everyone to complete such tasks with satisfactory results. As a result, they end up spending more money than they would have if they had hired a professional in the first place. So do not be shy of seeking professional help. On the contrary, it is going to cost you less and save you a few extra bucks and will also save your time.

Inaccurate measurements

The problem of inaccurate measurements is related to the problem of professional help. People who try to design their kitchen by themselves generally end up taking inaccurate measurements of the things they want to build and the end result is a disaster. But it is less likely that a professional would make that mistake. So, in order to have the right measurement of things, you should hire a professional to design your kitchen.

Merely focusing on cooking

Generally, people want to build a kitchen just for the purpose of cooking. But a modern day kitchen should be much more than that. It should be the place where family and friends can meet, eat and talk together. To achieve this purpose you must have an island in your kitchen where people can eat and sit together or even a breakfast bar, if you feel like being a bit more lavish. This way, you can also reduce the workload of the person working in the kitchen to carry the food around.

Buying furniture that does not fit in and does not go with the theme of the kitchen

Do not buy furniture that reduces the working space in the kitchen. This is a common mistake people make while designing their kitchen. They buy furniture which eats up a lot of space in the kitchen and leaves little room for moving around. Another thing that should be kept in mind while buying furniture, is that they should match the theme of your kitchen. For instance, if your kitchen is painted white, then buy furniture that matches that color.

Working against the shape of your kitchen

While buying furniture keep in mind the shape of your kitchen. Designing according to the shape will enable optimum use of the kitchen room.

Too few plug sockets

You will be using a lot of electrical appliances in your kitchen. So have a number of plug points at different places in the kitchen. But have the sockets at places where they will not be tarnishing the look of your kitchen.

Placing cupboards in inaccessible areas

The perfect place to have cupboards for storing items is overhead. But make sure that you can easily open the cupboards doors and take out items without using a chair or a stool. It makes working in the kitchen a tad bit easier.

Quick tips:

1. Have a balanced plan for your kitchen and make optimal use of the kitchen room.

2. Choose the right kind of design layout before planning the kitchen design.

3. Make sure you only buy quality goods for your kitchen even if they cost you a few extra bucks.

4. Paint your kitchen walls with the right color. The color should go with the overall theme of the kitchen.

5. Do not try to do everything on your own. Hire a professional for the right quality of work.

6. Prepare a budget for the kitchen. While making the budget, do not focus on spending too much or too little. Just spend the right amount of money you need to have the kitchen you desire.
