Eco Smart Homes : A color-changing polar bear as power monitor

glowing polar bear

If you thought only a chameleon changed colors, think again. Because here’s a polar bear that changes colors too. Hang on, don’t gasp. Here’s something more. Unlike a chameleon, you can keep this polar bear in your house and I bet he will be of great use to you. To be precise, he will help you save power, save environment and save electricity!

The Product:
First and the foremost, let me clear the air. This is not a real polar bear but a stuffed toy. It’s a cute little cuddly polar bear, which indicates the level of a household’s energy use in real time. It’s not cheap but is definitely very eco-friendly. It’s a polar bear with a mission – mission to create awareness about energy saving and global warming. It stops you from crossing the line and helps you cut down your power bill.

The designer:
This color changing polar bear is the brainwave of pk47. He has put up his invention at this year’s GE Ecomagination challenge and is already getting rave reviews from environmentalists and people at large.

“The idea presented here is an attempt at creating an energy awareness culture, identifying desired behaviors, and understanding what motivates people. I hope to be in a position to change the world for the better, and this is my small contribution,”

says pk47, who aims appeal to the conscience of the people in the matter of energy conservation, and what better platform he could find to showcase his idea than GE’s Ecomagination challenge.

Overview:

This stuffed polar bear glows every time lights are switched on in the room. It radiates various colors as a warning for home energy use. The elegant looking toy communicates with the electricity meter, and ‘blows hot and cold’ based on the energy use. When energy use rises over a certain threshold, the bear glows pink and glows green when energy use is within acceptable limits. The bear is the best way to draw the attention of children who inadvertently leave electronic appliances such as computers and gaming consoles after they are through with them.

Green Aesthetics:
According to its creator pk47,

“By developing renewable resources and using efficient technologies in our homes, we can protect the environment, stimulate the economy, and increase energy security.”

For most of us, raising or lowering the thermostat setting, or turning the lights ON, are simple actions. But they are not aware of the disastrous consequences that it has on the environment. The smallest incidence of energy burning adds to the heat in the atmosphere thus adding to the green house effect. A polar bear is the icon of global warming and to see it changing his color in response to their action is more likely to make you pause and think about the necessity for more cooling or brighter lights.
