8 humanoid robots to help you do the household tasks

Arop Pattnaik . Apr 30 2011

The closest resemblance that I can draw while referring to humanoid robots, are few movies good old characters in classics like Star Wars, Surrogate, I-Robot, Terminator and Bicentennial Man. As we come closer to use AI (artificial intelligence), the boundaries seem to fade away. Scientists have been on a quest to find the perfect humanoid, though it might take some more time.

Basically, a humanoid robot is an autonomous robot, and can adapt to changes in its environment or itself and continue to reach its goal. This is the main difference between humanoid and other kinds of robots. Here we talk about a few and best among them.

1. Aiko: A living doll humanoid robots

Le Trung is the creator of Aiko, a sweet girl in her twenties, who not only looks feminine but is also capable of doing household chores.

Le Trung has spent a lot of time creating codes for Aiko to be his perfect partner. Aiko can speak two languages, solve maths equations and has a 13000 sentence vocabulary. It can differentiate and react when touched. The only sense missing in Aiko is the sense of smell.

Aiko is capable to complete almost all household work and she doesn't complain. I wonder who wouldn't want such a woman even though she is a humanoid.

2. Care -o- Bot: Smart robot

It's been 10 years when Fraunhofer IPA offered this world the first generation mobile robot assistant Care-O-bot who is able to assist humans in their daily life.

Care-O-bot is already in its 3rd generation now. It's capable of attending to human needs as an interactive butler and assists in household works. It can move safely among humans, detect and grasp typical household objects and safely exchange them with humans. You need to have one of these if you have priced crockery at home, just to ensure that they are being handled properly.

3. Mechanical home maid

As we choose to become more dormant, we still are ready to welcome the android home maid(s).

If you look around to pick one, you will be surprised by the options you will have. Like this robot from Toyota capable to do laundry, cleaning rooms and tables by being able to identify obstacles. The very same year another robot maker TMSUK presented a robot which can be controlled by cellphone anywhere from the world.

This list just doesn't stop here as you can opt for home robots - like the iRobiQ, which can do various tasks via. voice commands; the Rovia a three-wheeled home surveillance robot, the Robomow who can mow your lawns and Verro who can clean your pool.

All you need to do is pick one to meet your specific needs and then leave it up to them.

4. SmartPal V

Created by Yasukawa Electric Corporation SmartPal V was designed and programmed to be a full time service robot.

With 4 CCD cameras and voice recognition system SP V can recognize voice and respond accordingly. The design of the robot is quite unique with 21 joints which include a bendable waist allowing it to pick things from the floor.

Even when not commanded, SP V will wander around and tidy things up on its own. That's something we don't find these days.

5. ApriAttenda by Toshiba

Toshiba's range of service robots continue with ApriAttenda. This mini robot standing 1m tall can adjust its height by adding 0.3m. It has wire-controlled hands with three fingers on its arm and small CCD cameras in its hands. It is able to open doors of a refrigerator and also picks up box.

The best feature demonstrated by ApriAttenda is its ability to distinguish particular voices from among many from multiple directions, and recognize the direction of origin, and interact with the speakers by responding to a repertoire of commands.

This robot can recognize a registered individual and follow that individual from place to place, even among groups of people.

6. Asimo UPPA The 'humanoid' robots

Not far behind the league is Asimo designed and created by Honda. This certain and planned detour from their daily work must have been for reason, as they have been working on Robot tech since 1986.

Asimo can brew and serve tea along with other service activities like picking up things, pushing a trolley around. The robots work in pairs and are virtually connected by a system developed by Honda, they can share real time data (in short can know each others where about).

The 4ft 3in tall Asimo is smarter now, thanks to upgrades that allow it to do more tasks without human help, reveals the creators. For example, recognize drink choices and carry a tray with the requested drink to the person who placed the order and does a better job of moving around people because of technology that allows it to better predict people's movements so it doesn't get in the way.

Asimo, which means Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility and is considered one of the world's most advanced humanoids. It can walk, even jog, wave, avoid obstacles and carry on simple conversations.

7. Kitchen robot makes it easy for you

Japan leads in the field of robotics that is usually used for industrial applications. Professors at the Tokyo University created this robot, which can be used in other fields, after 4 years of rigor and cutting edge technology gathered from more than 40 Robotics and Information Technology professors.

This robots movements are not as fast as humans and can a bit jerky, still it can serve you a cup of tea and clean the cup later and also do the dishes.

8. Motoman SDA10 robot cooks pancakes for breakfast

By the time I conclude this online directory for service robots, I am sure you will get hungry. But imagine if you can get the multi-talented Motoman SDA10 from Yaskawa Electric, who can grill okonomiyaki(a Japanese savoury pancake) with manual precision while you still finish this article.

After Motoman grills your pancake, it can serve it in a plate with added condiments. It is designed to work independently with humans. It stands 4.5 ft tall and weighs 480 lbs. It has 15 joints — 7 in each arm and one in the torso — allowing a wide range of motion for the job.

See how far we have come to get things done so easily, or is it that we are just getting lazy and tired of doing the same things daily? What ever may be the reason, the help has already arrived.

And by any chance if you have one and you forgot to charge them up, don't bother it knows when and where to charge itself up.
