Eco-inventiveness shines at New York Design Week 2011

New York Design Week 2011 was a mix of cutting-edge designs that tilted overwhelmingly towards going green. Here's a list of award winning designs that will put a heartwarming glow to any space it accommodates.

1. Elegant Silk Gail Lamps

The award winning Gail collection by Aqua Creations displayed some mesmerizing designs using hand-dyed silk. The gossamery hand crushed material is contrasted by the black metal within which it is framed. Adding to the dainty look of the piece are the energy-efficient CFL bulbs that are placed within these lamps.

2. Frances Ranno Sneaks Lamp

A tribute to Nike brand, the Sneaks sneaker lamp is an elegant lighting solution that is bound to add a contemporary touch to your home. The award winning design, created by Frances Ranno was unveiled at the Pratt Student Show during NY Design Week. The chic rendition of men shoe has an electric cord that is made to appear like undone shoe laces. The green touch is given by the energy efficient lighting that comes in neon yellow, lime, pink and red.

3. Flat Pack Pendant Lamps

First exhibited at the New York Design Week’s Model Citizens exhibition, Perhacs Studio’s collection is bound to brighten up any living space. The environment friendly designs are made by assembling laser-cut cardboard shapes. The result is a nature inspired collection in warm colors. The collection also provides a variety of forms – while some are highly geometric in structure, some display branch-like designs.

4. Esque's gorgeous Afloat lamp

A gorgeous mix of glass and leather, the Afloat lamp by Esque is sure to blow the minds of those who relished their (Bar)barian collection. The mouth-blown glass balls lit delicately give a primeaval look to the design. The modern appeal is provided by the hand-crafted leather that holds the glass lamps together.

5. QisDesign Coral Reef LED Floor Lamp

QisDesign’s Coral Reef Floor Lamp is aimed at giving a lighting ambiance that imitates underwater glow. The design inspired by the coral reef provides a clean look to the three layered lamp. Each layer swivels independently and provides and thus provides the user with multiple lighting options. The swiveling layers themselves are meant to resemble the tidal waves. The lamp uses light-weight LED that doesn’t heat up and suits the swiveling design.

6. Sweet and soft leaf samp

The leaf lamp by Peter Schumacher is bound to be the center of attention in any living room with its birch wood trunk and unbleached starched wool leaves. The cheerful design is inspired by lush trees that are dot the streets of Sweden. the wool leaves combined with the LED bulb set within it provides a soothing, warm glow. The trunk of the lamp is constructed by sustainably sourced birch. So with every purchase, one birch tree is planted by the Swedish furniture company at its local production site in norther Skane.

7. Delta IV

Based on the design of propulsion systems and rooftop vents, the Delta is small, lightweight piece with a rather unusual design – ideal for home and office lighting. They are compatible with compact fluorescent and other energy efficient bulbs. They come either in black fabric and gold or white fabric and translucent white linear.

8. Aqua Creations 96 Molecules

Marrying the precise art of origami and the art of digital wood carving, Aqua’s 96 molecules focuses as much on providing the right kind of lighting as much as design. The origami cuts of the lamp shade which is fitted with a touch-controlled LED provides diffused light that can be dimmed to meet the user’s requirements. This one is a perfect marriage of inventiveness and craftsmanship.

9. The Plumen

This award winning design by Samuel Wilkinson and Hulger is the first ever designer bulb to provide low-energy lighting. Talk of a smart design! Its exquisite design will add a touch of glamour to just about any room and is a major energy saver as it consumes 80% less energy than an incandescent bulb.
