Gertee is a small portable Alaskan yurt near Kenny Lake and Niki Raapana is its proud owner. The yurt utilizes the scraps of lumber and other building materials, dead timber and fabric that would otherwise be dumped into thrash. Standing about 16 foot wide the, the house needs 80 wall slats. It is all scrap wood, scrounged plastic, billboard covers and bits of cloth, held together with zip ties. With the rustic interiors, the broken boards are utilized for walls of about 5 feet only. Short thin trees, bamboos, pipes and other metals are also well utilized.

The walls slats are laid out like lattice on the ground and tied together at each cross. The roof ring is made from metal screen that has been curved into a circle, and the roof cover from a waterproof material like tent bottom scraps and airplane covers. The door frame is carved out of 4 boards screwed together to form a rectangle or a standard door with a frame can be used, even if the walls are shorter than the door. A lively house with well utilized material.
