The Notknot pillow by Umemi

There is no greater comfort than snuggling up with a soft and fluffy pillow, whether it be to sleep, watch TV, or embark on a long chatting session with friends. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, hence the importance of a comfortable pillow cannot be understated. Nowadays, simple bed pillows are available in ever increasing varieties of fill material, fabric, shapes and designs. The common bed pillow whose only purpose was to provide support to the head and neck while sleeping has further been adapted through modern design and technology to address a whole new gamut of functions, ranging from the utilitarian and therapeutic orthopedic pillows to aesthetic decorative ones.

Like most objects of daily use, pillows too have lent themselves to designers to test the boundaries of creativity. From pillows that play music to ones that glow in the dark, from animal shapes and cartoon characters to embossed lettering that shows up on your cheek when you wake up, designers have overhauled the way we look at and interface with pillows. The Notknot range of pillows are a good example of how design, creativity and utility can come together to create an unusual but endearing concept.

This line of unique pillow designs comes from Umemi, the design house of the award-winning, 30-year-old Icelandic designer, Ragnheiður Ösp. The designer's fascination with knots and their purpose is used to turn the hard and binding concept of a knot into a loose and comfortable object to help one relax with.

These designs came from her study of nautical and scout knot books. Machine knitted and made from Icelandic wool, these pillows have two layers of wool, and have acrylic filling inside it. They are about 20-24 inches in diameter and are soft and comfortable.
