Stunning 'Stone Lamps' by Japanese design group Shibaya

All of us are familiar with the age old story of 'fire invented from rubbing two stones together'. Earlier inventions were mostly made from natural elements found in the earth like wheel from wood, weapons from stones and the like. Then with passing time and plethora of information and resources at hand natural elements took the back row making space for synthetic and more manmade materials, which is why, wheels are now made of rubber and weapons are made of every harmful material man can find and make.

Let’s concentrate on light. Fire took shape to form a much advanced electric light bulb to tube light then compact fluorescent lamp or most commonly known as CFL etc. The bulb alone giving light is not fancy enough for our home, which is why light stands and lamp shades came into being. There are different varieties of lamp shades made from different materials but the one I am going to introduce to you is something you would not have even given a thought of. Stone lamps are the new light giving forms in town. It is the new Japanese way of decorating your house with this unique piece of lighting. The idea to create this one of a kind stone lamp emerged from Japanese beliefs and their philosophy of design to make things from natural elements that can be used both as art and home decor.

This stone lamp is the creation of a Japanese design group, Shibaya which was also an exhibit at "Asia Now" hosted by Designbloom. This stone lamp is made by using only natural objects like sea stone and natural wood. Since there are no fixed shape and size for stones and each stone is different from the other, the stone lamps are made in such a way that all lamps are unique in its own way. Different kinds of stones are used of differing shapes and sizes and they have not been shaped or cut to form a uniform shape.

The stone lamp comes with three wooden stands for holding the stone. Also a big hole is drilled out to provide room for light in the middle of the stone. You can insert an electric bulb inside the hole as a source of light. To give the stone lamp an attractive and vivacious look, a wooden panel carved in the shape of a butterfly or any other design for that matter is fitted atop the hole in the stone. When the lamp glows, light flows out through the wooden panel illuminating the butterfly.

This stone lamp, handmade by the artist is sure to attract a lot of eyes and ears in your house, office or anywhere else. The stone lamp is a very innovative piece of decor plus serves its purpose of spreading light. And to top it all up with some icing, the left over stone which is drilled out is not thrown away. This cylindrical shaped stone cutout is used to make candle holders there by making full use of the stone to its maximum.
