Eyjafjallajokull By Mia Göransson: A lamp inspired by volcanic erruption

Iceland Volcano Inspired Lamp

What looks like an ugly piece of basic lamp from a few centuries back, is actually a piece of creativity inspired by Icelandic volcanic eruption in the month of May last year. This creative piece is crafted by the Swedish ceramicist and designer Mia Göransson. The product which is also a part of the Fifty/Fifty project, as one of the four products, in collaboration with the designer Katja Pettersson. It has derived the inspiration from the infamous volcanic eruption that has filled the sky with ash, hence created a lot of trouble for the travelers to the European countries.

In continuation of designer’s “New Nature” theme and named after the notorious volcanic eruption Eyjafjallajokull. The lamp is comprised of an over sized bulb and a nebulous mass symbolic to the cloud of ash, on the side to counter balance the lamp and also functions as a push down switch for the lamp.

For making the volcanic eruption her inspiration for creativity the designer says:

When I made the model of what has come to evolve into a lamp, ashes from the volcanic eruption in Iceland dominated the news and that made an impression in my design. It was the air, the oxygen in the bubble, the pure form versus the organic unidentifiable smoky and a bit uneasy derivative of a geometric shape, the base.

The designer who takes the inspiration from nature and tries to be away from the strictly geometrical form, has created this lamp with a round base with holder to attach the bulb vertically and can be switch on /off with the help of the cloud of ash shaped switch. Well, in my opinion the lamp just looks like a raw form of a bulb holder as the lamp has nothing striking about it. The lamp lacks the sheer visual appeal.

Even though the concept is unique the lamp fails to impress me as it does not come across strongly. Eyjafjallajokull in my opinion could be better if the concept would have come across clearly. Right now, for me it’s just a piece of junk that someone has put together to create a temporary lamp for an urgent need.

Definitely, I will not be very keen to dig into my pocket to own something like this. There are lots of other unique and creative ideas with beautiful aesthetic appeal as well. But I guess if you know about the designer, you know what to expect.
