How To Clean A Bath Tub Drain

Normally, bath tub drains get clogged due to accumulation of hairs, soap precipitates and other dirt particles in it. Regular cleaning can keep that accumulation under check and will also prevent the bad odor that sometimes such wastes can create. You need to clean the bath tub on a regular basis in order to prevent frequent clogging. You can follow these easy steps to understand how to clean your bath tub drain.

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Resources Required
1. Screw driver
2. Long needles or any long and thin rods
3. Chemical or enzyme drain cleaner
4. Rubber gloves

Instructions

1. Firstly, drain the bath tub and let all the water in tub flow. If the drain is partially clogged then water will drain slowly. If it is totally clogged then water will not drain and it’s time to call the plumber. If water drains with full speed, then no need to clean it now. Reschedule it for later.
2. Now, pull out the drain plug as much as you can and locate the nut underneath the plug. Unscrew it and remove the drain plug. Don’t apply too much force if it is not coming out.
3. Now there must be some accumulated greasy dirt. Pull that out in drainage pipe by poking needle or rod into that. Do it properly from all sides until most of dirt is out in pipe from the end of drainage plug.
4. Next, pour in the drainer into the pipe and drain some hot water on drainage powder. Use gloves for extra precaution as these enzymes may contain harmful chemicals.
5. Now drain hot water into the bathtub for 10–15 minutes to clean the drainage pipe properly.
6. Screw the nut back and close the plug and enjoy taking bath in your bathtub.

Quick Tips

1. One must not leave the empty shampoo or bodywash sachets or plastic pouch in bathtub as they are the most important reason for frequent clogging. Even drainers cannot clean up such type of clogging and they are to be plucked out of pipe manually later on.
2. Before closing the drainage plug back, you can also check the gasket around plug to check for wear and tear as a broken or worn out gasket will leak water. If it is worn out then you should replace it.
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which drainer to use?
A: Enzyme-based drainers require more time to clean up the pipe as it cleans through bacterial action. Thus, in case of application of enzyme based drainer you need to leave it for more time in pipe. They also work better when concentration of dirt is low. Thus they won’t work when pipe is more clogged. Chemical-based drainers may do it quickly and efficiently but they may not do the job as effectively as enzyme-based cleaners. In addition, they are harmful for skin and eyes also.
