It is in the teens that most kids are struggling with their self image, trying to find out who they really are and what their likes and dislikes are. They would also be getting more independent wanting to make choices on their own. In the process of finding themselves, many of them have to experiment with new and different things before they know what they really want for themselves. This being the case, decorating a room for a teenage boy can be a toughie. Here are some general tips that could guide you through the process. The themes you can use are favorite sport, music band, Movies or series, wildlife, Cars and Bikes, Super heroes, Geography and the like. You can do this by using posters, wall papers, theme pillows, carpets, even designing the furniture to match the themes. This is very popular among the teens. Choose colors Choosing the proper color scheme is vital to the looks of the room when all is done. The best suited colors for boys are the earthen tone colors like browns, tans, grays, creams, greens, oranges, whites, blues and some reds. But, of course, each teen will have his favorite color that he would want to see in his room. If you are using a theme, than that will influence the choice of color as well. You can choose to get creative by using magnetic paint on at least one wall, where all the posters and pictures can be stuck using magnets. 3. Choose the right bed The bed will be the single largest piece of furniture in the room. So, care must be taken to choose the right kind of bed given the space constraints within the room. In smaller rooms, using a Bunk bed is an excellent idea. Also the space under the beds can be utilized for storage. There are several ways to get creative with beds, especially with loft/ attic beds. You can also blend the bed in with the other furniture using a monolithic design. 4. Furniture Three things to keep in mind while designing the furniture are storage, study and entertainment. The best storage option for boys is a tall chest that can hold all his clothes. He will also need a desk and chair to study at and do his homework. The study table can also hold stationary and other articles. You might consider putting in a small book shelf or rack in the study area. Another piece of furniture worth having is an entertainment center that can hold his TV, video games, music player or maybe even a computer. It is advisable not to have any fixed furniture. 5. Use a Mirror A mirror is an essential part of a teen’s room, irrespective of boy or girl. A large part of the self image is formed looking at themselves. So, teens tend to spend ample amounts of time in front of the mirror grooming themselves to look their best. There are ways to get creative with mirrors as well! 6. Lighting and Wall Lamps Task lighting can be used in the study area and near the headboard of the bed. This will allow him to read a book in bed. You can use lamp shades and floor lamps if it suits the theme of the room. Another cool addition is a wall sign or wall lamp, including those that illuminate specific articles in the room like the Guitar. 7. Make use of shelves Implementing shelves provides ease of access by compartmentalizing items into different sections. It can fit in with any design for the room and can be distributed at strategic location around the room, instead of having one tall set of shelves. The shelves can be used for both display as well as storage for trophies, books, collections, decorative items and gadgets. 8. Cool and trendy storage options Regular wall mount cupboards are a thing of the past. The trendy new storage options are integrated into other furniture around the room. You can use large cubes instead of small compartments that would allow them to store larger items like sporting equipment out of sight. 9. Hang up colorful curtains Curtains are essential for protecting the boy’s privacy, while not keeping out natural light and fresh air from entering. You can match the color of the curtains with the other furniture in the room. Some other cool options in this section that you might consider would be roller shades and stacking glass blocks. 10. Warm and Cozy flooring Wooden flooring is the best option for a teen boy’s bedroom. If you choose to have a carpet, it has to match with the theme of the room and the color scheme of the walls. 11. Decorate the walls Teens love to stick stuff on the wall. They like to have all their favorite people and things around them on the walls. While the magnetic paint is great option, you can choose to put the posters in complimenting frames. You can either dedicate one wall for all the graffiti, pictures, posters etc. Else they can be displayed around the room in small sections. Having a cork board or a display board is very useful and prevents damage to the walls. 12. Lovely bean bags Bean bags and Ottomans are very handy and can be used for a variety of purposes. It can be used by friends, while they visit or to just relax and read a book or play a video game.
