Though most of us are privileged to have electric lighting all inside our homes, there are billions of people across the globe without access to electricity. For most of us, it is even hard to imagine a single evening during the exams without electricity while billions of students across the globe have to rely on kerosene lamps or other fuel based lamps. D.Light has come up with an affordable solution for such under-privileged students across the globe.

D.Light, a company that originated as a Stanford design school project, announced that it has come up with the most affordable solar lantern in the world. This invention is surely a life-changing effort by D.Light for the under-privileged people, especially students.

Kerosene lamps and candles give light that is associated with air pollution and fire hazard. Moreover, with the hike in the price of kerosene, it is becoming hard to afford by the under-privileged families of the developing countries of the world. Thus, D.Light has launched their cheap solar lanterns that can provide bright light sans pollution.

Backed by investors like Acumen Fund and Draper Fisher Jurvetson, D.Light has designed the solar lanterns with LED lights that are high in quality, durable and low cost at the same time. Each lantern has a rechargeable battery and a charge controller. The charge controller is an electric circuit that controls the battery from being over-charged or discharged too low, both of which can damage it. A variety of rechargeable batteries are used including lead-acid, NiCad and NiMH batteries. The D.Light S250 model even comes with a combination of solar-powered light and cell-phone charger in one.

These solar lanterns conform to the green revolution as well. They give only bright light without any noxious gas emissions. According to researches, one D.Light solar lantern can replace more than one kerosene lamp. By replacing kerosene, these lanterns therefore reduce carbon emissions in the air. Kerosene lamps also pollute the inner environment of the house and can cause fire hazards leading to burns and deaths. But D.Light solar lanterns are safe from all these hazards. It consumes no electricity, it just gives bright, clear and clean light. So not only students can benefit, the solar lantern can be used for all purpose wherever it has to fight the dark.

Now that’s a real affordable green effort by D.light we can say. Targeted at the under-privileged citizens of the developing countries, the D.Light solar lanterns are not only cheap but environmentally-friendly as well. Though can be used by all, there is no denial of the fact that it is a green gift to all and especially to the under-privileged students across the globe.
