A house is a brick and mortar structure which provides shelter from the elements at the very least. It’s there for you to return from your place of work, a place for your family to come to at the end of the day. But there is a difference between a house and a home. How does a house become a home? How does a shelter transform into a place which is a safe haven, and take on a meaning? Read on to know more about the things which make your house a home:
The people (and dogs and cats and maybe other pets)
The people and maybe the pets that live with you in your house make it a home. Children playing and laughing and talking, you busy in the kitchen or gardening outside, or just relaxing with a cup of tea, your better half tinkering around – the activity, the chores, all the normal mundane, routine things that the people living in the house perform transform it into a home.
The sounds (and the silence)
The sound of the blaring TV or the sound system blasting out the latest hits, banging doors and barking dogs, arguing kids or a toddler throwing a tantrum, and you screaming for everyone to be quiet! Every home has its own special sounds which lends it its especial character, whether one has kids or pets or not, but the familiar sounds makes a house a home. And sometimes, the sound of silence as you enjoy the house to yourself for some time, till the mayhem starts all over again.
The “smell” of home
You never notice the “smell” of home, when you’re in it all the time, but can only smell it when you have away for a long time. It’s not a disgusting smell, but one which is distinctively an aroma, which is perhaps a combination of everything in your home. Sometimes, of course, the smells are that of your cooking or baking and everyone in your home can identify the unique smell or smells of your home. Perhaps the smell of baby powder permeating your home, which separates it from being a mere house.
The cozy nooks
The place which you collapse in at the end of the day, and immerse yourself in the book of the moment, the space which gives you “your space”, and every person in the house has his/ her favorite place, a cozy corner where they love to spend time alone – this is one of the things which undeniable makes a house a home. Even pets have their own favorite space, which could be right at your feet, or your favorite chair, or maybe their basket which has to be in the midst of you all.
Your treasured collections
Your house is full of the things you use to decorate, which are just decorative items to others, whereas every item has history behind it. The rug you picked up for a steal, the vases and paintings which you couldn’t resist buying, the book and music collection which keeps growing, the small mementos gifted by friends and relatives, the card up on the place of honor coz your kid made it for you – the list is endless.
You know your house is a home when you rush to change into your most comfortable clothes which are completely out of fashion, but just right for you.
A house which is not messy, cannot be called a home, many think. A sterile interior, with no sign of life has no character at all. The mess made by all the members of the family, including the toys lying around, pets’ and children’s’, books here and there, the shoes and sandals littering the hall – the mess in a house lets it become a home, as it shows that someone is living there.
Memories you make in a house is what makes it a home – the celebrations and the tears, the sharing and the caring and everything in between, the parties and the quiet evenings which you spend happily in the company of loved ones are some of the wonderfully lovable things which makes your house a home.
